If ever there was an irrepressible personality it was Cath Tizard. She had life by the ears and shared her thoughts and joys with anyone who wanted to hear them.
I have this wonderful memory of Cath, who had just retired as Governor General, standing on the balcony at Sam and Tony’s restaurant,Dorothy’s on the corner of Latimer Square. Cath was singing “Over the rainbow” that famous song celebrated by the gay community. Her rendition was gutsy and delivered with the confidence which Cath brought to everything.
Cath started public life in local government. Serving as a city councillor in Auckland and then Mayor. She moved onto being appointed as Governor General during her third term as Mayor of Auckland. Cath was the first woman mayor of Auckland and the first woman Governor General.Pam and I are great mates with Cath’s daughter Judith and to her and the family I wish them deepest sympathy. Here’s a picture with Cath with one of her granddaughters. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/true-trailblazer-for-women-aucklands-first-female-mayor-and-nzs-first-female-governor-general-dame-catherine-tizard-dies-at-90/
