How often we are told that the government cannot afford to support community-based structures which people desire to see delivered in their lives. Well, I’ve just been sent this document published by the Scottish Government:
Today, the SNP Scottish Government delivered a budget that gives voters in Scotland the best cost-of-living package in the UK – both protected and expanded. “It shows, once again, that when decisions are taken here in Scotland, we can choose fairness, compassion and investment, not cuts.”
The headline commitments:
The best cost-of-living support anywhere in the UK:
Scottish Child Payment will rise with inflation
From 2027–28, families with a baby under one will receive £40 per week
Breakfast clubs in every primary and ASN school by 2027
More wraparound childcare before and after school
Peak rail fares abolished – for as long as there is an SNP government
A more accessible and stronger NHS:
More GPs and new walk-in GP clinics, ending the 8am rush
£22.5 billion for health and social care
More operations and appointments
Better pay, training and support for NHS staff
Expansion of Hospital at Home and community care
Giving our young people the best start in life:
Record investment in affordable homes
10% increase in college funding
Continued free tuition and apprenticeships for young Scots
A majority of Scottish taxpayers pay less than those in the rest of the UK:
Basic and Intermediate income tax thresholds rising 7.4%
Over 55% of Scots will pay less tax than elsewhere in the UK
Those with the most will contribute more, including a new private jet tax
This is a Budget that puts people first – protecting families, strengthening our NHS, and investing in Scotland’s future. A budget for Scotland. A budget that is well worth voting for.
