I wrote last week about the comments made by Sam McDonald about how he feels the Councillors handle members making submissions when he said “we probably don’t listen to most of them”. I suspect that Sam was embarrassed by the coverage that this irresponsible comment received. He then reverted to a long-discredited technique of creating a smoke screen. The Mayor was then accused of being a bully.
Well, I have watched the Mayor’s comments on line and the only thing I could say is that Sam and his colleagues lost the debate on the day. That’s called democracy. It appears they then reverted to tossing their toys out of their cots. All I could say is that Lianne is much nicer than I would have been as Mayor in this situation. I had no time for this sort of game playing and would have given them the rough side of my tongue. Both in the chamber, and afterwards in my office.
This sort of behaviour makes people fed up with politics and brings the important responsibility of politicians into disrepute. When you lose a debate elected reps, suck it up. I know how it feels. I was on the losing side many, many times.
