There has been growing international discussion of ’20 Minute Cities’ or ’20 Minute Neighbourhoods’ as a means to improve the quality of our lives as well as contribute towards wider goals associated with local economic regeneration or climate change.
This talk will explain the emergence of the agenda, describe the key benefits it can bring, and outline the challenges for bringing this idea to life in a New Zealand context.

Iain White is Professor of Environmental Planning at the University of Waikato. He is committed to engaging beyond the discipline to researchers, practitioners and communities to conduct science in a way that generates real world impact. This approach has been applied most recently relating to housing quantity and the quality of places, and he is a strong advocate for better planning outcomes in New Zealand. Iain has authored or co-authored four books; Water and the City (Routledge, 2010), Environmental Planning in Context (Palgrave, 2015), Why Plan? Planning Theory for Practitioners (Lund Humphries, 2019), and the Routledge Companion to Environmental Planning (Routledge, 2019).
