Last week we had a talk by Kathleen Gallagher who has just produced a film on the swamps of this country. It’s called The Swamp, The Sacred Place: A celebration of Aotearoa’s wetland kaitiaki. Kathleen took us through the various swamps she visited, and the community support structures which are attempting to reset the role and place of swamps.

Kathleen has also produced a book which accompanies the film “The swamp, the sacred place” its Māori name is “Rohe ko repo repo”. This book is available at Scorpio Books.
After Kathleen’s introduction we had an entertaining discussion on the film and input from Di Lucas. Di’s work with farmers demonstrated that the challenges raised by the film are being heeded by leaders in the rural community. We agreed that we would arrange to watch the film around World Swamp Day in February. We also discussed taking up the offer we had earlier in the year to visit an irrigation scheme in South Canterbury early in the new year.
Rosemary is going to work with Kathleen on how to make this excellent doco available for showing…
