"Late 21st century Christchurch will be unrecognisable when compared with Christchurch today.

Flooding will prompt retreat from all eastern and many northern suburbs. These areas, together with land near the Heathcote and Avon Rivers, are in a fifty-year flood zone. Fifty-year floods can happen more than once every fifty years; there can be two fifty-year events in consecutive years if you are unlucky, or if climate forecasts are inaccurate."
