Each day I receive a daily blog from John Burn, who was a City Councillor back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the planet. In fact, when I think about it, he might be a direct descendent.
However, I allow myself to be distracted. This week I took the poor old chap out to a café for a wee break from his having to live in Merivale. He seemed to enjoy the outing and didn’t upset too many people in my neighbourhood by expressing his personal opinions, of which he has a considerable number and only too willing to share them.
In his daily blogs John covers a multitude of topics, including his briefing for his surgeon who replaced his knee a few weeks ago. I felt very sorry for the surgeon as John could have turned into a vexatious litigant if he had put his knee on backwards, or worse. It took me some weeks after his blogs started to become aware that retired lawyers were capable of having opinions which went beyond a lifetime of six-minute charging cycles, but there you go.
Anyway, here is a very small snippet of one of his paragraphs he wrote this week:
But back to common sense. I will not be watching the leaders’ debate tonight. I have no interest in it, and like us all know the outcome of the vote. We are a mild country – no revolts, little crime, honest judges and a good deal of common sense. We do not need flamboyant pollies like Winston or some in the smaller parties.
If we keep boxing on, and not getting too excited, we can live well by taking in our own knitting, driving older cars, putting all we can spare into education and welfare for those who need it – and this does not clash with building a sound business economy, with plenty of jobs. I see nothing against taking in migrants but what we must not do is to get tied up with the big powerful countries – who’s dishonest pollies are clearly committed to tariff wars, migrant camps, dirty politics and cruelty to folk of other colours.
