This week we have asked the newest City Councillor, Celeste Donovan, who replaced James Daniels when he resigned from Christchurch City Council. It was an interesting election, and the people of the East elected a strong woman with environmental skills to lead the very part of this city which will be impacted first by Global Warming.
I met Celeste after she had voted against something I had made a submission to the Council. To say the first few minutes of our discussion were tense would understate things somewhat! We both fought through this and had a very enjoyable conversation about the importance of public policy and the role of public office. Celeste is not at the Council to play games. It seemed to me that they annoy her.
We need more younger councillors. Here is a councillor who I think needs to be supported. She brings skills to the Council table that we need more of, and I am only too happy to support her. Even if she voted the wrong way the day I appeared before Council by misinterpreting what I spoke about!
