As a parent you don’t get to view a side to your kid that you don’t know much about very often. As a sat and listened to our son Tim speak about the difficult topic of the “Right-to-life” legislation and its implementation I was impressed by his professionalism. This topic is about as hard as they get. For a person in pain and dying to have the right to choose when they die is something which challenges us all. We have all grown up with stories of old people in certain tribes wandering away to die because they have become a burden to the tribe. This seemed to be a myth. Or old fuck knuckle leaving Scott’s tent saying “I may be sometime”.
Now legislation will challenge us to address these sorts of issues head on. It was helpful for me to hear about the checks and balances which have been written into the legislation in Victoria. It was also interesting to hear about the obstacle put in the way by the Catholic Church in Melbourne led by Cardinal George Pell…
This was a challenging and thoughtful evening. Those present responded very sensitively and it was a Tuesday Club meeting I will really remember. Thanks Tim. Because the sensitive nature of this talk, the video has been removed from the Tuesday Club facebook page, but is available on request.
