Has Christchurch got too many golf courses when we have housing needs

I read about a local uprising when residents objected to the Shirley Golf Club (THE golf club in Christchurch) cut down some trees recently. Read it here

I wasn’t concerned about a club cutting down trees on its own land. What sparked off in my mind is how many golf clubs we have in Christchurch. I reckon its about 17.  

How many golf clubs do we need when we have a desperate need for housing sites? Is this a conversation which we should have as a city?
