The most important way to stop COVID-19 (aka Coronavirus) from spreading is to follow some basic hygiene advice:
- hand hygiene – wash regularly and for at least 30 seconds (the jury is still out on hand sanitiser although as of 15 March, this is still listed as an option on the Ministry of Health website)
- self isolate – stay at home if you are sick with anything (even if you haven’t got COVID-19 itself, you don’t want to give any health issue to anybody else as that may weaken their immune system, and that’s the last thing we want)
- coughs and sneezes – into a tissue or your elbow, followed by washing your hands
- surfaces – clean those surfaces that get touched regularly
My local publican claimed that the Medical Officer of Health advised him that keeping your mouth moist and regularly washing the content into your stomach is also a good strategy. If you’ve got the virus in your mouth, flushing it into your stomach will apparently kill it as it can’t cope with stomach acid. Not sure whether that was a ploy to sell more beers; in the first instance, I’d rely on the bullet points above. Hand hygiene is a top strategy.
