OPINION: City council staff are paid by us – the rate paying citizens of Christchurch – to serve us. The information they gather belongs to us. Quite simply, we paid for it.
So to hear that some of the council’s most senior staff might be deliberately manipulating information to ensure we never see it, is simply outrageous.
Yet this is exactly what chief ombudsman Peter Boshier was told was happening when he launched an investigation into Christchurch City Council’s handling of requests for public information under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act. Read more

Christchurch City Council staff ‘hid’ bad news from councillors and the public. Former chief executive knew and did nothing.
Allegations that senior Christchurch City Council staff manipulated reports and deliberately kept negative information secret were not taken seriously by the former chief executive, a damning report has found.
The leadership and culture at the organisation has been heavily criticised by Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier in a report investigating openness and transparency at the council.
Former chief executive Karleen Edwards, who left in June, failed to take “appropriate and adequate action” after staff raised concerns that some members of the executive leadership team (ELT) were hiding information, the report says.
