In the Press this week there was this article https://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/121765215/possibly-12000-christchurch-homeowners-have-hot-water-cylinders-fail
It was the first time that CCC has admitted that chlorine contributed to the corrosion which has wrecked so many hot water cylinders:
Christchurch City Council’s head of three waters and waste, Helen Beaumont, agreed chlorine, along with other factors, contributed to pitting corrosion in the cylinders.
What concerned me is, I am not sure that CCC can refuse to release a ruling by the Disputes Tribunal. Surely this was not what Helen Beaumont said? Aren’t Disputes Tribunal decisions are publicly available documents?
She said the council would not compensate homeowners because failures were caused by multiple factors and chlorination was inevitable due to the council’s Health Act requirements.
Beaumont said a 2019 Disputes Tribunal ruling affirmed this position, though the council refused to release the ruling.
The next question is when will the chlorine be removed permanently from our water?
